Day after day I'm more confused

sounds better with a D at least to me

the E doesn't sound right at all with Capo 2.

Here's the strum pattern I use, where "D" is downstroke, "_" is let previous ring-out / do nothing, "x" is palm-muted strum and "U" is up. For beginners, this is a very percussive strum pattern, where 1/2 of each measure is "x's"; meaning each strum of "x" is a strum but muted, as in not pressing down on the string to sound a note. And you only have to strum a few of the strings on each "x" strum, since you're not sounding out actual notes but just providing a "brushing" / "sweeping" sound.
