Capo III
[Intro]
| D | G | A G | D G |
[Verse 1]
D A G | D G/D |
In the early morning rain with a dollar in my hand
D G | D G/D |
With an aching in my heart and my pockets full of sand
D G A | D G/D |
I'm a long way from home, Lord I miss my loved ones so
D A G | D G/D |
In the early morning rain with no place to go
[Verse 2]
D A G | D G/D |
Out on runway number nine, big seven-o-seven set to go
D G | D G/D |
And I'm stuck here in the grass with a pain that ever grows
D G A | D G |
Now the liquor tasted good and the women all were fast
D A G | D G | A G | D G/D |
Well now there she goes my friend, she'll be rolling down at last
[Verse 3]
D A G | D G/D |
Hear the mighty engines roar, see the silver wing on high
D G | D G/D |
She's away and westward bound, far above the clouds she'll fly
D G A | D G/D |
Where the morning rain don't fall and the sun always shines
D A G D G | A G | D G/D
She'll be flying over my home in about three hours time
[Verse 4]
D A G | D G/D |
This old airport's got me down, it's no earthly good to me
D G | D G/D |
And I'm stuck here on the ground, as cold and drunk as I can be
D G A | D G/D |
You can't jump a jet plane like you can a freight train
D A G | D G/D |
So I'd best be on my way in the early morning rain
[Coda]
D G A | D G/D |
You can't jump a jet plane like you can a freight train
D A G | D G | A G | D G/D | D
So I'd best be on my way in the early morning rain

See my comments on the second version of this tab on UG. It's a G6 both in the original GL book and in almost all his live performances. Obviously, an Em is a sub for G6. PP&M have it in their version, but as the change suggested by dwightcollins (ie the 3m not the 2m), although their version is in a different key. The version here is very close to the one in 'The Music and Verse of Gordon Lightfoot', except all the Gs ar G6.

I agree about the Em being a very important difference; it takes the place of the G in the 4th line of each verse.

Nice. I think it’s an Em before the G chord on each verse’s second line....
